The historical marker on the corner of the building reads as follows:
Dome School was established shortly after the formation of the Dome Chapter (1240) that belonged to the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. In 1319 it obtained the privilege of the Danish King for exclusive rights of teaching the sons of knights and citizens. It was still located in the wooden building across the street in 1613. In 1756 it was turned into the Knight Academy which was under the command of the Estonian Nobility. The Academy's students were prepared for University. The current building was consecrated in 1840.
Many great Baltic German men studied here. The school was closed during the period of Russification in 1893, when it was demanded that all teaching be in Russian. It was reopened in 1906. After the abolition of knighthood (1920), it functioned as a German grammar school unitil the forced leaving of the Baltic Germans from Estonia in 1939.
