What rich, progressive, new mining town in 1910 could survive without communications? Certainly not Rossland - so it follows that they built themselves a telephone exchange, and strung miles of wire all over the town and up the mountain to all the mines.
The two buildings in the photos, on first glance, appear not to have any resemblance whatever, but the roof line and the location of the doorway give away the identity of the newer one. When the exchange was modernized and moved further east in town, the old building was renovated and became the Senior Citizens' Centre. A second photo shows the original brick still exposed on the side of the building.
Situated on the north side of First Avenue just east of Spokane Street (Spokane, BTW, is where a lot of the money that built the mines came from, and later, when the mines were in production, went to.), the view in the photo is directly north across First Avenue.
