The first was in the Stussi Building 1 1/2 blocks west, across Columbia on the south side between Spokane and Earl Streets in about 1896. This general merchandise store was built some time between then and 1910, when this picture was taken. Initially the western end of the store was occupied by the Royal Bank of Canada, until it relocated next door.

The store sits on the northwest corner of the intersection of Columbia Avenue and Washington Street and is presently occupied by Rossland Pro Hardware. The view is across the intersection looking northwest.

Three items that reveal this building's identity are the square turrets in the roof corners, the intricate brick work along the roof-line and the inset doorway in the front. Note that both the building to the left and the building to the rear (The Alhambra Hotel) are now gone.
Year photo was taken: 1910
