The South Shelter
The first shelter at Çatalhöyük (South) was built in 2002 to protect and continue excavations on the southern slope of the mound where James Mellaart had first excavated. The South shelter is designed and constructed by “Atölye Mimarlik” an Istanbul based architectural office.
It helps to protect the site from sun, wind rain and snow. It also allows archaeologists to excavate during summer months.
Inside you can see the remains of several buildings, which are excavated, conserved and put on display. People lived in these homes about 8800 years ago.
Today only the floors, walls and certain features remain. Inside you can find ancient ovens, burial pits and wall decorations. You can also learn more about archaeological techniques we use on site.
