The Key Monument Association erected a memorial in 1898. The remains of both Francis Scott Key and his wife were placed in a crypt in the base of the monument.

"Oh, say can you see..." is the familar opening line of the The Star-spangled Banner penned by Francis Scott Key while being held hostage during the shelling of Fort McHenry. While Key died and was buried in Baltimore, the remains of he and his wife were later moved to Frederick to ultimately be place in a crypt in this monument. The favorite son's influence continues as the local baseball team is known as the "Keys".
