First 100 Years of Eureka Spring

This historic mural (12 feet high by 55 feet wide) dramatizes the early days of our community; from the Indians who first camped here and discovered the curative properties of the many springs to the tourism of the early 20th Century. This painting was done by members of the Eureka Springs Guild of Artist and Crafts people. It was designed and supervised by well known artist & muralist Louis Freund, longtime resident.

The historical scenes identified in the painting left to right are:

1. Indians camped at Rock House Cave (still to be seen up the stairway at 29 S. Main St.)

2. Early campers with tents and covered wagons.

3. The Calif. House and Store )now the Historical Museum)

4. The colorful Tally-Ho (yesteryears sight-seeing bus)

5. Queen Deer House (in the same location today overlooking Basin Springs Park).

6. The Southern Hotel (destroyed by fire in 1933).

7. Pine and hardwood forest before the development of the city.

8. Basin Spring (still popular today).

9. Mule drawn street car (our trolley of today was modeled after this early vehicle).

10. Perry House, destroyed by fire in 1892 (Basin Park Hotel stands on this site today).

11. "Flat Iron" building build in 1881 was located at corner of Center and Springs Streets.

12. Crystal Terrace, built 1885, located above Spring St. near Crescent Spring.

13. The splendid Crescent Hotel, built 1886, and still in use.

14. Original Train Station, built in 1883, reconstructed in 1913.

15. First tourist camp in Eureka Springs (1920's)
