A geological treasure sits in the parking area near the Longyear historical drilling site and trails. The marker was placed by the Iron Range Historical Society and reads:
This piece of rock is from the lower part of the upper slaty member – Biabik formation. The rock consists of thin, wavy beds of magnetite, magnetic black fine-grained argillite and irregular shaped pods or lenses of chert/silicate. This rock is about 2 billion years old.
During the last glacial stage, about 10 thousand years ago, this rock was plucked from an outcrop north of here.
