Poirot and Hastings visit Parade Film Studios where Poirot meets his old friend Prince Paul of Maurania. Prince Paul is engaged to the actress Valerie Saintclair. When Miss Saintclair finds the film producer, Henry Reedburn, dead at his house Poirot is engaged to investigate.

After Miss Saintclair discovered the body of Henry Reddburn in his library she ran across the garden to find refuge with the Oglander family. The Oglander family had been playing bridge when Miss Saintclair banged on their window. The bridge game was abandoned and the cards are still on the table. Poirot examines the cards and finds that the King of clubs is still in the box. How could the Oglanders have played several rounds of bridge with only 51 cards?

Poirot soon divines that the Oglander family are not what they seem. They were not always called Oglander, having changed their name after a financial scandal. Further, Miss Saintclair is one of the family, she also having changed her name. It becomes apparent to Poirot that Reedburn knew all this and had blackmailed Miss Saintclair into a new film contract. Reedburn’s death was, however, accidental. Ronnie Oglander had hit Reedburn in a row about the contract and Reedburn had fallen and hit his head in the fall.
