The Soldiers' Monument is a 6' high granite figure of a Union soldier standing on top of a 21' high granite base. The soldier is wearing a visored cap and knee length coat with a cape. He is carrying a kit with belt on his right side and a bayonet on his left side. He holds a rifle by the barrel with both hands, left over right. The rifle butt is on the ground by his right foot.
The figure of the soldier stands on top of a tall base decorated with raised the flags and eagle emblem of the United States on the front side, three stacked rifles on the east side , Seal of Connecticut on the back and crossed cannon on the west side.
The monument is made of Quincy granite fabricated by the Fox-Becker Granite Company. The monument was completed on October 6, 1904 and dedicated on May 30, 1905
Each face of the base has the name of a Civil War battle. The front face is inscribed:
