The first theater in Tavira opened in 1911. Later, in 1914, the building of a new theater, the Teatro Popular, which was inaugurated in 1917. In 1942 it was renamed with its current designation, "António Pinheiro". In 1964 the place was shutdown but soon the building was renovated, and opened in 1967 as it is now.
