The Hampden World War I Monument is located on Main Street near the junction with North Street in the center of Hampden, MA

An 8' high gray granite statue of an American World War I soldier stands on top of a 12' high gray granite base. The soldier is standing at parade rest with his hands on the barrel of his rifle, right over left. he is wearing a winter uniform with hat, long overcoat and boots.

The ornate square base tapers and is topped with a circular column decorated with garlands. A dedication appears on the brown granite panel on the front of the base and the names of the citizens of Hampden who served during World War I are inscribed on brown granite panels on the other three sides of the base. The entire monument rests on three levels of granite blocks. The monument was commissioned in 1919 and sculpted by Enzio de Santis.

Around each side of the base are the names of the World War I battles:

SOISSONS
CHATEAU THIERRY

The front panel is inscribed:

IN HONOR OF
THE MEN OF HAMPDEN
WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT
WORLD WAR THAT THE IDEALS
OF LIBERTY AND JUSTICE
MIGHT BE PERPETUARATE. THIS
MONUMENT IS GRATEFULLY
DEDICATED AS A MEMORIAL
TO THEIR UNSELFISHNESS AND
PATRIOTIC SERVICE
