The article that was published on August 8, 2011 by The Seaside Signal about this memorial provided details about the neighbors that live near this memorial and their efforts to continuously care for the memeorial. The memorial consists of a concrete wall about 10 inches tall that surrounds a small plot, two rocks that are painted white and include the words "Known Only To God" and "Found On Beach April 25, 1865", plus a flag pole and flag. The neighbors try to keep American flags on the memorial year round, and sometimes there are flowers as well.
While there are no known records that verify the exact history of this small gravesite, it is believed to be the burial site of 3 sailors that had come ashore on April 24, 1865 in the search of fresh water, then returned to their ship before dark to continue their journey, only to be killed in very rough waters and wind that night. The account continues that their bodies washed ashore the next day and were buried just above the high tide line on the beach, where this memorial is now.
