The origin of the church of Saint-Die back to Déodat (Dieudonné or Die), an Irish monk who founded the city in the seventh century that still bears his name. First abbey church, she became a collegiate chapter of secular canons.
René II considered the fourth "cathedral" of his duchy, after those three Lorraine bishoprics, Metz, Toul and Verdun.
In 1777 the church was elevated to cathedral when Pope Pius VI granted the bubble erection of the diocese of Saint-Die (Cf.Quatrième Bishopric).
Already burned several times during its history, it was dynamited by the Germans (despite promises to the contrary initially taken by them) in 1944 and lost its entire roof. Rebuilt exactly as it received new furniture and was re-consecrated in 1974. In the mid 1980s, modern stained glass windows were made non-figurative drawings on known contemporary artists.
L’origine de l’église de Saint-Dié remonte à Déodat (Dié ou Dieudonné), moine irlandais qui fonda au VIIe siècle la cité qui porte encore son nom. D'abord église abbatiale, elle devint la collégiale d’un chapitre de chanoines séculiers.
René II la considérait comme la quatrième "cathédrale" de son duché, après celles des Trois-Évêchés lorrains, Metz, Toul et Verdun.
En 1777 l'église fut élevée au rang de cathédrale lorsque le pape Pie VI octroya la bulle d'érection de l'évêché de Saint-Dié (Cf.Quatrième Évêché).
Déjà plusieurs fois incendiée au cours de son histoire, elle fut dynamitée par les Allemands (malgré les engagements contraires initialement pris par ceux-ci) en 1944 et perdit l’ensemble de sa voûte. Reconstruite à l’identique, elle reçut un nouveau mobilier et fut à nouveau consacrée en 1974. Au milieu des années 1980, des vitraux modernes non-figuratifs furent réalisés sur les dessins d’artistes contemporains réputés.
