It's construction probably started shortly after the conquest of Silves (1248). Apparently it was built over an old Arab mosque. The pure initial Gothic style was washed out by successive works in the church, but still remains as the predominant style. The church was specially shaken by the big 1755 earthquake and the works which took place after brought a strong baroque trace to the building.
The church has a reddish color, due to the usage of a local stone (Grés de Silves) which has a red color (the same happened with the castle, not far from this church).
