Cuxton in Kent, once a quiet village dating back to Saxon times close to the River Medway.

This grade 1 listed building defies the way all other churches are built. All Churches face East, however, this Church does not. It was built at this angle as it is believed that at this location there was already sacred buildings on the site.

It is said that churches back in Saxon times were built at footpath intersections which made it easy for people to go and worship. It is likely that at this place the 'Church' was an open area. There are records showing that a building was here around 855AD. Ethelwulf, King of the West Saxons (839-855), gave this Saxon Church to the Bishop of Rochester.

Part of the current church has some Saxon stones used in its construction, however, mostly it is of Norman build. The church was modernized in Victorian times but held on to the features before this.

Although records show a church was handed to the Bishop of Rochester around 855AD, the earliest recorded Rector whose name we know was Thomas in 1185.
Date the Church was built, dedicated or cornerstone laid: 01/01/1185
