Gerald Woodley, a tailor, died of a heart attack in the village of Milton Cross. Two years later his widow, Sonia, is a troubled woman. She goes to confess to the Reverend Morland, but is knocked out and stabbed in the churchyard on the way there.

Barnaby and Jones investigate the murder. The pathologist tells Barnaby that the wound to Sonia rings a bell in his memory, but he can’t remember why and will get back to him.

Meanwhile Joyce Barnaby calls at the local tailors shop, Woodley & Woodley. The shop is owned by Sonia and her brother in law, Matthew Woodley. Whilst there Barnaby meets the lord of the manor, Edward Milton, and local businessman Morris Bingham. She soon learns that nearly everyone in the village, apart from Morris, are effectively tenants of Edward Milton and fear loses their premises if they annoy Edward Milton. A local youth attempts a robbery whilst Joyce is there, but is spared punishment by Edward Milton, who is a committed church goer.

Barnaby talks to Wendy Minchin, the last person to see Sonia alive. Wendy tells Barnaby that Sonia was troubled by not calling the ambulance immediately when Gerald was dying. She and Matthew had waited until he was dead. Apparently Gerald was a wife abuser. She also tells Barnaby about a letter Sonia had shown her.

The letter is later handed by Morris to the vicar. The vicar is attacked in the churchyard soon after and killed, in a similar manner to Sonia. The pathologist remembers to tell Barnaby that the knife wound was two wounds, one driven in from each side. In fact the weapon was likely to be tailors shears. Gerald’s shears have gone missing from Woodley and Woodley.

Barnaby talks to Joyce about the day she was in the tailors shop. He asks her if Gerald’s shears were there. They were when she went in, but not when she left. Barnaby deduces that Edward Milton must have them.

In an unexplained way Barnaby deduces from a map that the ice house on the Milton estate holds the key. Barnaby and Jones rush off to the ice house, just in time to stop Milton from ritually murdering Katie Soper.

In the clip Jones is seen leaving the Milton Arms, after questioning the landlord. Barnaby rings him to update him with his findings. The Milton Arms is, in fact, the Green Dragon at Flaunden. Interestingly the Green Dragon is still visible over the door.
