Four Seasons Roman Mosaic is from House Vlll South, Caerwent, excavated in 1901.
This mosaic had faces in each corner, representing the four seasons. Only Summer and Winter survive. The torch bearer near Summer has a torch fully ablaze, the torch bearer near Winter had a dead torch.

"The archaeology collections span over 100 years of collecting and represent thousands of years of human activity in and around Newport.

The story of Roman south east Wales is told through artefacts showing aspects of both military and civilian life.

Roman archaeology

The Roman army’s initial foray into south Wales was unsuccessful as he legions met stubborn and drawn out resistance from the native Silures.

By the mid 50s the Twentieth Legion had established a fortress at Usk, bringing the immediate area under Roman control although progress was halted by the Boudiccan rebellion, which focussed Roman attention to the east.

The Silures were eventually defeated by the Second Augustan Legion in the mid 70s. The key to the Roman victory was a strategically placed fortress at Caerleon, with an accompanying network of forts.

In time, the Silures were granted a form of local government with a capital at Caerwent." Text Source: (visit link)
