The William Shatner University Centre of McGill University is located at 3480 McTavish Street, Montreal, QC. It is also affectionately known as "The Shatner Building". Previously known only as the "University Centre", in 1992, students held a referendum and voted to change the name of their student centre to honour alumnus William Shatner who graduated in 1952 with a B.Com. The prevailing logic deemed the "good Captain" worthy of the honour because no other McGill graduate had ever commanded a starship within 15 years of graduating.
Although the University did not officially accept the name change, citing toponymy regulations, it does acknowledge the name on
websites and on a campus map, noting that “Known to students as the Shatner Building, it is three times the size of the old Student Union Building, which now houses the McCord Museum.” A red sign bearing the name "William Shatner University Centre" made by students hangs inside the building. In June 2011
Shatner addressed Faculty of Arts graduates when he was awarded an honorary doctorate from McGill, telling them they should boldy go and seek out their future.
