Warr Acres was originally established in 1948 by C. B. Warr, a businessman, builder and commercial developer. The city is bounded roughly by Wilshire on the north, Mueller on the west, N.W. 33rd on the south and Meridian on the east. It is a commercial and residential area on the northwest side of Oklahoma City.
Comprising approximately 2.8 square miles, its population in the 2010 census was 10,043. It has a Mayor-Council form of government. This metal welcome sign is located on the southeast corner of N.W. 63rd and Mueller. It is coated with a reflective material which glows in the headlights of nearby traffic. The sign reads: Welcome to Warr Acres / "A City Set On a Hill" / President R. Reagan.
This phrase refers to a Biblical Scripture - Matthew 5:14 where Jesus said: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid." Ronald Reagan quoted this phrase in 1984 in his acceptance of the Republican Party nomination, and again in his January 11, 1989 farewell speech. The City of Warr Acres has adopted this quotation as its motto.
