Visitors to Reser Stadium are welcomed with two very impressive and eye-catching bronze sculptures of real-life fans celebrating the Oregon State Beavers football team. They literally pop out of the brick towers they are monumented to and the scene is of a celebratory nature, with various people of yelling or smiling, men and women, most likely for a Beaver touchdown that was just made in the end zone. Beaver Fans 1 is the first of two commissioned pieces, this sculpture being constructed in 2006, that artist and Professor of Art, Emeritus Tom Morandi created as part of a competition he applied for and won for Oregon's One Percent for Art Program. One percent of the cost of new state buildings in Oregon is required to be used towards the purchase of art.

Different generations of OSU students, alumni and general Beaver fans were each paid $15/hr to pose in various expressions and movements. Wax molds of these expressions were then made which were later bronzed into what you see today. Each individual pose took about six weeks to complete and a crew of about a half-dozen undergraduate students aided Professor Morandi in his project. It was a true labor of love for the professor and he was very happy with the final result and felt proud to be able to give something back to the community and to the students, alumni and fans of Oregon State.

You can visit Tom Morandi's personal website and view his portfolio of work and other accomplishments throughout his very productive career.

On a personal note, I was an art student of Professor Morandi in '91-'92, and can say he was a very popular instructor at Oregon State. I feel privileged to be able to waymark his commissioned pieces and even more so now that the Beavers are currently undefeated in football and ranked #7 in the country. These bronze Beaver fans have been a common expression at home games this season! GO BEAVS!
