Chomutov is placed at the foot of the Ore Mountains in north-west Bohemia in the vicinity of the German border. It was established on the crossroads of previous business routes connecting Prague with Leipzig and Cheb with Ústí nad Labem.
The settlement process commenced during the Stone Age. The first written record of the town originates in 1252.
The City tower is adjacent to the gothic Church of Ascension of the Virgin Mary and forms a dominant building of the protected city architectural area. It was completed in 1525 but the base part was arched with rich cell-vaults at the turn of the 16th century. The last reconstruction took place in 1874 in neo-gothic style. It is accessible every day with the exception of Monday, from May to September.
