The ANZAC was built between 1932 and 1934. The memorial originally did not have an eternal flame. The flame room was to be an archive of documents of Australia's involvement in World War I. Due to the lack of funding this archive was never established. During the 1990s the room was converted to the Flame Room and the Australian Gas Light Company (now AGL Energy) purchased and installed the Eternal Flame. Behind the flame are the flags of Australia, New Zealand and New South Wales.
