In 1824, five white settlers decided to kill a group of nine Indians living near them close to Fall Creek in Madison County, Indiana. They killed 2 men, three women and four children and took their furs. The murderers were caught, tried and hanged , except for the ringleader who escaped and a 19 year old who received a dramatic pardon from the Governor as his head was in the noose.
