Ravalli County was formed in 1893 with the county seat at Stevensville but in 1898 the county seat was moved to Hamilton. The brick classical revival style Ravalli County Courthouse was designed by A.J. Gibson. The building was constructed by Charles Stabern from 1900 to 1901. The courthouse served the county until 1974 when a new courthouse was completed. In 1979 the county voters decided to save the building from destruction and the Ravalli County Museum moved into the building. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings on April 20, 1979.
