Helsinki harbour rail connected cargo terminal to Central railway station. When harbour was converted to a new suburb, old sidetrack became a route for pedestrians and cyclists.

The track was constructed in 1890s and dismantled in 2008. Cycle path was opened in Summer 2012.
Despite being relatively short (barely one kilometer in length) Baana is an important part of urban infrastructure. It allows cyclists and pedestrians a quick and safe route from west to the very heart of the city. Since the route is in a chasm there are no crossroads or traffic lights. 7 busy streets cross Baana on bridges.
Close to Southwestern access the chasm widens and the area has been used to build a youth hangaround with artwork, basketball field, ping-pong tables etc.
