On 17 April 1939, during the Dutch mobilization, the construction of the military airfield Valkenburg began. It was contracted to the Dutch Heidemaatschappij. From the wide area thousand, mainly unemployed, workers attracted to the job. The construction was done in the context of a job creation project.

During May 1940, the airport, while it was not finished, was occupied by the German troops after two attack waves. In this fierce battle there were many deaths. In the village of Valkenburg the people of the EHBO arranged a school at the Kerkweg as a hospital and the town hall as a bandage post. In the hospital there were wounded civilians, German and Dutch soldiers together.
