Buffalo Bill Dam is part of the Shoshone Project, a major undertaking to provide water for farmland irrigation in northern Wyoming. Originally named Shoshone Dam after the name of the project, it was renamed in honor of "Buffalo Bill" Cody, who owned much of the land inundated by the lake and who was the visionary who worked toward turning the Big Horn Basin from arid land covered in sagebrush to lush farmland via major water diversion projects.
