The Ames Mill Dam was originally constructed of wood in 1855. It was later rebuilt in 1919 out of concrete. It was used to power the Ames Flour Mill (now owned by Malt-O-Meal) but no longer serves any functional purpose.
Because of this, as well as safety and environmental concerns, it's days are probably numbered. Like many old dams today, it would cost less to remove than to try and maintain it.
