Michael Brown's Bell Tower at the Akard Station is part of DART's commitment to use public art to beautify and bring character to its light rail network. DART has commissioned several unique clocks and kinetic pieces that are on display in several stations along the Green, Red, Blue, and new Orange lines that snake through Dallas County.
This particular sculpture is a favorite of children, with its motion and unexpected playfulness. It springs into life every hour on the hour, when a cascade of dozen colored steel balls are released to race around roller coaster tracks and ring bells. The balls are funneled together and collected by an elevator contraption that carries them back into place to await the next hour's fall.
The sculpture is 15 feet tall, so there is a lot to see from many angles, no matter how tall or short you are. Great fun!
