The monument 'De Leeuw' reminds the inhabitants of Katwijk on the heavy fighting between the 4th Infantry Regiment and the occupier.

With the memorial also all citizens and soldiers are commemorated, who since the outbreak of the Second World War were killed in war and in peace missions.
The monument 'De Leeuw' in Katwijk is a tuff stone statue of a lion. The image is placed on a columnar base of natural stone.
The text on the pedestal:
'1940 - 1945

'IN DANKBARE HERINNERING AAN LEDEN VAN LAND-, ZEE- EN LUCHTMACHT, ILLEGALITEIT EN KOOPVAARDIJ GEVALLEN IN DE STRIJD VOOR DE VRIJHEID VAN ONS VADERLAND'.
In remembrance of members of land-, sea-, and airforce, illegality and merchant navy fallen in the fight for freedom of our motherland.
In 1998 a memorial stone with the following text is added:
'TER HERINNERING AAN HEN DIE VIELEN NA 5 MEI 1945 IN VOORMALIG NEDERLANDS INDIË OF WAAR OOK TER WERELD'.
‘Reminder for those who fell after 5 may 1945 in former Dutch Indies or where the world.’
