"The City of Airdrie has been with twinned with Gwacheon, Korea since 1997. The Twinning program started with the intent to provide opportunities for Airdrie residents to share cultural experiences, develop friendships and explore economic opportunities for local businesses.

Gwacheon Park was officially established on July 2003. The location for Gwacheon Park was selected because of the great visibility and prominence within the heart of Airdrie. Gwacheon Park has a place of honour and will be visited and enjoyed by thousands of people. As our relationship grows and flourishes, so will Gwacheon Park.

The stone anchoring the Korean arch and holding the plaque are made of sandstone, which is the foundation of our city and symbolizes the strength and endurance of our Sisterhood. The butterfly symbol of the City of Gwacheon was used for the central flowerbeds, the flag poles and the sitting area. The Sisterhood agreement has greatly enriched the communities of Gwacheon and Airdrie with continued friendship and understanding between our diverse cultures. In 2007 6 hand crafted totem poles were donated to the City of Airdrie by Gwacheon Korea to commemorate the 10th year of sharing a sister city relationship. Airdrie residents are welcome to view the totem poles in Gwacheon Park in Airdrie all year round!"
