Eastern Airlines Flight 605, a DC-4, was flying fron Newark, NJ to Miami, FL on May 30, 1947 when the airplane crashed in rural north eastern, east of Port Deposit, Maryland taking the lives of all on board. There were 49 passengers and 4 crew members.
Shortly after flying over Philadelphia, at 5:41 pm, people on the ground watched the airplane begin a steep dive and crash. At that time, Flight 605 was the deadliest crash in United States aviation history. A Civil Aviation Board's investigation determined that the cause of this accident was a sudden loss of control, for reasons unknown.
A granite monument is located on the east side of Principio Road about 1.25 miles north of I-95. The monument is inscribed:
