This historic bell is located in the memorial for the USS Portland, in Fort Allen Park, Portland, Maine.
Nearby is an interpretive sign regarding the memorial, which reads in part: "USS Portland Memorial. You see here the top of the mast, the bridge sheet and the bell from one of the most decorated ships of World War II."
Thanks to Maine businessman Arthur Forestal, who stepped forward and advocated for the creation of this memorial in 1959 when the USS Portland was scheduled for demolition, we have the opportunity to view this historic bell in person, in Fort Allen Park, Portland, Maine.
The bell is situated so that an adult could reach up and touch the bell, but is still a safe distance from the ground so that it will not be a hazard to visitors. It is possible to have a photo taken with the bell and visitor together.
