Who was Armando Gri? Armando was born December 25, 1918 in Phoenix, BC. As a young boy the family relocated to Trail, where they took up residency in "The Gulch": a predominate Italian community.

In 1940, Armando Gri enlisted in the Canadian Army. While serving with the Princess Mary's, a Canadian Scottish Regiment, in France and in Holland Sgt. Gri distinguished himself on numerous occasions, for his acts of bravery and courage as a platoon commander.

He was awarded the Military Medal and the Distinguished Conduct Medal. At a later date he also received a bar to the Military Medal, and two oak leaves.

In 1944, Sgt. Gri was taken prisoner by the Germans. During his imprisonment, he endured horrific conditions. He was later being transported across Germany and because of his resourcefulness and foresight he concealed a penknife before boarding the van. Sgt. Gri and his fellow prisoners carved an escape hatch in the side of the van and made their escape.

With the aid of Dutch freedom fighters, Armando was able to reach Holland, where he made contact with the British Army.

Sgt. Armando Gri is considered one of most honored and decorated non-commissioned officers in the Canadian Army in WWII.

Armando Gri died January 1, 1991.

This memorial is located in "The Gulch".

Sgt. Armando Gri's name is also placed on the "Home of Champions Monument" in downtown Trail.

You will have to park on a side street and walk to the plaza as there is not any street parking where the monument is located. It is a very short walk about 250 meters.
