Scotland is located in Bon Homme County, South Dakota, and has a population of 841 as of the 2010 census, a decrease in population of about 6% from the 2000 census.
German, Czech, Norwegian, and Irish immigrants settled in the area and the town itself was incorporated on March 13, 1886.
Scotland was formed as a post office along the stage route from Yankton, and at first Gunnville was suggested as the name. But the family of Gunn refused and so it was decided that it be called Scotland.
