WOW! What an awesome discovery! Found this benchmark with my girlfriend and her kids and nieces on a beautiful Saturday afternoon near the Klamath River.

This benchmark was located after seeing it on a topography map listed as 4439. This benchmark STILL had its original wooden witness post near it from 1905, although the witness post was spotted by my girlfriend's son, Andrew, lying under some oak leaves about two feet from the benchmark.

I have found a number of these 1905 benchmarks and they are always a pleasure to locate, especially one like this one, which most likely hasn't been touched in over 100 years. It was encrusted with dirt and pitch and took quite a awhile to rub clean with an old sock and water. The kids really enjoyed finding this benchmark and it was a very educational experience for the nieces since they had never seen one before.

This benchmark is located at a junction of Topsy Grade Rd and another dirt road leading east. It is located about 15 feet west of Topsy Grade Rd and the original wooden witness post was propped back up with lava rock to aid in recovery.

This benchmark does not exist in the NGS database and has the designator of 8 stamped at the top of the disk as well as the elevation of 4441 and the year 1905 stamped on it too.
