This sign is located adjacent the Sherwood Cemetery, were the old railroad tracks used to pass by. The tracks are now gone, and in their place is the Confederation Trail, a walking/hiking/biking trail.
Here is the text from the sign:
"Cemetery Station
The Prince Edward Island Railway had a reputation for being accommodating. Trains would stop just about anywhere for anyone. The first stops out of Charlottetown were St. Dunstans (at the College), two miles from the station, and Sherwood, four miles out. Sherwood Station was at the crossing of the Sherwood Road near the south corner of Sherwood Cemetery.
Sherwood Cemetery was established in 1872, three years before the railway opened. It was a long distance from downtown, especially for a funeral procession. In early spring and late fall the condition of clay roads could make attendance impossible. An arrangement was made with the railway in those times for special trains to deliver the deceased, mourners and clergyman to Sherwood Station where they could walk a short distance uphill for services. These funeral trains would have consisted of one or two passenger cars and a boxcar behind an engine. After the stop the train continued on to Royalty Junction where it could turn around and be back at the station in time to take the funeral party back to downtown. The cost in the early 20th century was just $10.00. The name "Cemetery Station" is indicated in Meacham's 1880 Atlas but "Sherwood Station" is found in more recent times. "
