If the desire to travel by train between the capital of Vietnam and the southern Chinese city of Nanning ever strikes you, this is the place to begin your journey. The Gia Lam station has dual tracks, both the Vietnamese one metre gauge and the more common, standard gauge (4' 8½"), thus Chinese trains can journey across the border to Hanoi and stop at this station.

The station itself is not that flash. A single large room facing the street and opening onto the tracks. Inside a ticket counter, and a blue seated waiting area. Most of the time, not very busy.

The ~400kms journey between the two cities will consume ~12 hours. Two trains run daily, one at night, and one during the day. The cost is around $40 for a soft sleeper (a narrow bed—the most comfy option). The station is a little out of the way, across the river from the city centre/tourist hangouts. A taxi will cost you $5-$10, depending on your negotiating skills. There is public transport here, but I am unsure of the details. You can buy a ticket at the station, but the easier option is to use an agent in the city. Check times and dates, as departures can vary widely and quickly, and get there early. Stock up on snacks. Also, visa, you will need to get a visa way before you arrive on the border. Possibly, you can get one in Hanoi, but maybe not. Check in advance.
