Ga Long Bien Station is a small train station located on the west bank of the Red River in the centre of the big city of Hanoi. Trains from here travel north towards China and to the small towns before the border. The station is on the line across the impressive Long Bien train bridge. There seem to be two station buildings, one on either side of the track, though I am unsure of just how the division of responsibilities works.
Each station is small and somewhat worn building in appearance. The approach to the track is gated off when there is no train ready to depart. A small selection of food and drink available to pre-purchase for your trip, but I advise buying any substantial provender elsewhere.
Tickets can be purchased at either station, though the precise details of this are subject to frequent change. Mostly, foreigners at least purchase tickets through agents in the city, for a small premium.
