John R Davis built this building as the new headquarters of the John R Davis Lumber Company after the Phillips Fire of 1894 which destroyed the city of Phillips, WI including mills, homes, stores, and the Court House, with the loss of fifteen lives. The lumber company stopped operation in 1926 after 44 years of continues logging operation.
The building was sold to John A. Johnson and the Johnson Hardware has called it home ever since. The address of the building is 195 N. Lake Street; Phillips, WI 54555
