"Kematen gehörte ursprüngliche zur Mutterpfarre Axams. Dieser waren auch die Orte Götzen, Oberperfuß, Zirl Selrain und Grieß zugehörig. In Kematen selbst gab es bereits im 11. Jahrhundert eine Kirche. Diese romanische Kirche wurde durch einen Brand im 14. Jahrhundert im Stile der Gotik wiedererrichtet. Nach dem Wiederaufbau der Kirche kam es zu zahlreichen Stiftungen zur Errichtung einer Kaplanei. Im Jahre 1520 wurde diese dann vertraglich geregelt, wobei der jeweilige Kaplan zur täglichen Messe verpflichtet wurde. Bald darauf wurde der Widum in Kematen errichtet.

1748 wurde die Kirche großzügig erneuert, wobei das komplette Kirchenschiff und auch die Sakristei umgebaut wurden.
