The Town of Shrewsbury is located in Worcester County in central Massachusetts. It has an area of 22 sq. miles and a population of 23,000.
The official seal of the town, adopted in December 1898, appears on the manhole. It depicts Shrewsbury Center as it appeared in 1898. It shows the Shrewsbury Common with the Civil War Monument and the Congregational Church, at the north end of the common. At the right is the old town hall. Above the vignette is the inscription Incorporated, Dec. 15, 1727. Around the edge are the words Town of Shrewsbury Massachusetts.
