This sculpture depicts a woman teaching and encouraging a girl in the art of playing a violin. The woman is somewhat standing, while leaning against a large rock. She has a book on her left knee and a pencil in her right hand, while at the same time, holding the book in place. Her left hand is behind the girls back as the girl leans into the woman with her head against her shoulder. The woman has her head turned toward the girl and is looking lovingly down at her face. The girl is looking up at the woman while holding bow in her left hand with a violin tucked under her left arm. The woman is in a long ankle-length dress, while the girls dress extends just below her knees. The plaque at the base of the statue reads:
Teaching with Love

While the Historic Nauvoo Visitors’ Center has visiting hours, the Monument to Women Memorial Garden is always open - and free. There are thirteen life-size sculptures in the Memorial Garden.
"In an age of heightened interest in the role of women, the Nauvoo garden of sculptures is dedicated to women of the past, present, and future. The statues, which were dedicated in 1978, identify some of the significant dimensions of a woman’s life.
The memorial consists of a heroic central sculpture of a woman, enhanced by twelve life-sized figures expressing the widely varied nature of women’s vital roles in society. The display may well be the largest commissioned display of sculpture in the world dedicated to women." (
