The SITE OF JOSEPH SMITH'S STORE, adjoining the marker, is clearly indicated by the cellar and foundation stones. Smith found time to conduct a general store while discharging his duties as head of his church and mayor of his town. His commercial venture was not a success, largely because of the liberal credit he granted to the poor. - Nauvoo Guide, pg. 43.

The building which house the store had deteriorated and was torn down by 1890. Since the Guide was published the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now Community of Christ) reconstructed the building on the original site, opening in April 1980. The store sells gifts and books.

The marker indicated has been moved next to the Nauvoo Visitors Center.
