'The Peace Gardens located to one side of Southsea Common are a simple but thought-provoking area of quiet contemplation. The area was given to the people of Portsmouth and Southsea by those of Caen in France to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the city’s charter and to remember those who lost their lives in the liberation of Caen in 1944. Monsieur Jean-Marie Girault the Senator Mayor of Caen officially unveiled the garden on 5th June 1994.'

Peace and Paix are topiary hedges from lavender bushes. The doves are made from alpine plants. There is a plaque in front of the area which reads:

'This Garden of Peace
was given to the city,
by the people of Caen,
to commemorate
the 800 anniversary of
the city's first charter
and in memory of those
who passed this way
to liberate Caen,
and occupied Europe
fifty years ago.
