The cemetery on grounds of the Joseph Smith Homestead in Nauvoo. The cemetery is the final resting place of members of the Smith family along with friend. The bodies of Joseph Smith, Jr. and his brother Hyrum, who were murdered by a mob at the Carthage jailhouse were originally secretly buried between the walls of the foundation of Nauvoo house while their coffins were buried near the Nauvoo Temple. When construction was restarted on the Nauvoo house the bodies were moved to beneath the spring house on the homestead. After much research and searching the bodies were found in 1928 and reinterred in the family cemetery. Others buried in the cemetery are Joseph Smith, Sr and his wife Lucy Mack. It is thought that there are 24 graves in the cemetery. In recent years considerable work has been done to the cemetery with the addition of walkways and benches. The cemetery is open 24 hours a day.
