EN: The Soldiers' Monument on the Bruderholz hill south of Basel is located on the north flank of a artillery scone of 1815. This scone was re-activated and manned during the 1st World War.
In 1925 a memorial to the military men of the 1st World War was inaugurated there. It was a relief plate with three over-sized antique clothed men in defensive posture created by Louis Weber (1891-1972).
In the subsequent years, the monument fell apart more and more. 1955 it was decided to expand the monument to the Second World War. Since the original relief was beyond repair, it was removed in 1957 and replaced with today's bronze plate. The inscription "In memory of the military men of Basel deceased during the border occupation and on active service - 1914-1918 / 1939-1945" was designed by graphic artist Numa Rick (1902-1973).
DE: Das Wehrmännerdenkmal auf dem Bruderholzhügel im Süden von Basel befindet sich an der Nordflanke einer Artillerieschanze von 1815. Diese Schanze wurde während des 1. Weltkriegs wieder aktiviert und bemannt.
1925 wurde das Denkmal für die Wehrmänner des 1. Weltkriegs eingeweiht. Es hatte eine Reliefplatte mit drei überlebensgrossen antik bekleideten Männern in Verteidigungshaltung von Louis Weber (1891-1972).
In den folgenden Jahren zerfiel das Denkmal immer mehr. 1955 wurde beschlossen, das Denkmal auf den zweiten Weltkrieg zu erweitern. Da das ursprüngliche Relief nicht mehr zu reparieren war, wurde es 1957 entfernt und mit der heutigen Bronzeplatte ersetzt. Die Inschrift "Zur Erinnerung an die während der Grenzbesetzung und im Aktivdienst verstorbenen Basler Wehrmänner - 1914-1918 / 1939-1945" wurde von Grafiker Numa Rick (1902-1973) gestaltet.

It's a wall of red sand stone attached to the north side of a 19th century artillery scone with a large bronze plate. The memorial can be entered from the back side, but the it seems to be a lookout platform without any hint that it is a memorial.
