Les embarcations governees a la rame, a la voile, et parfois halees par des chevaux sont progressivement remplacees par des bateaux a vapeur. La premiere tentative est effectuee le 9 aout 1803 par l'ingenieur Robert Fulton, suivie des experiences du marquis Jouffroy d'Abbans, en 1816-1817, avec le "Genie du Commerce". A partir de 1825 la navagation a vapeur se generalise, et deux lignes regulieres desservent en 1826 les trajets entre Paris et Saint-Cloud vers l'aval, Paris et Montereau vers l'amont. A l'occasion de l'occasion de l'Exposition universelle du Champs de Mars, unveritable service est organise en 1867 et confie a la compagnie des bateaux de Lyon, dite des Mouches. En 1873 apparaissent les Hirondelles, qui vont de Suresnesa Charenton, ou se trouve leur port d'attache. Le ministre des Travaux publics insaure la liberte de la navagation sur la Seine et la Marne pour les transports de voyageurs en 1881, et ce mode de locomotion reste tres populaire jusqu'a la disparition des bateaux-omnibus en 1934."

This historical marker is located on the south side of Pont au Double at the intersection of Quai de Montebello. It reads:
The boats have been governed by the oar, the sail, and sometimes hauled by horses, are gradually replaced by steamers. The first attempt is effected August 9, 1803 by engineer Robert Fulton; experiments followed the Marquis Jouffroy d'Abbans in 1816-1817, with the "Genie du Commerce". From 1825 navagation is generally by steamers, and in 1826 two regular lines travel between Paris and Saint-Cloud downstream, Montereau and Paris upstream. To mark the occasion of the Exposition Universelle du Champs de Mars, a veritable service is organized in 1867 and says the company has boats in Lyon, called the Flies. In 1873 Swallows appear, ranging from Suresnesa Charenton, which is their home port. The Minister of Public Works establishes freedom of navagation on the Seine and the Marne passenger transport in 1881, and this mode of transportation is very popular until the disappearance of omnibus boats in 1934."
