The welcome sign is situated on the north bank of the river overlooking the Town of Athabasca.

Nestled alongside the mighty Athabasca River and amongst the land of the Whispering Hills, the beautiful town of Athabasca is about a 2 hour drive from Edmonton.

Once contender for provincial capital, this rural town is nestled in the Boreal forest. Athabasca boasts a wide variety of wildlife. Deer can frequently be seen grazing in nearby neighborhoods.

A little history about Athabasca: In 1877, Athabasca Landing was established by the Hudson's Bay Company at the southernmost point of the loop of the Athabasca River where it swings northeast to Fort McMurray and Lake Athabasca.

The westward expansion into Indian Territory by European immigrants between 1880 and 1914 transformed Athabasca Landing from a river stopping place of native peoples into a Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post, and later, a northern boom town and transportation hub for freight and pioneers entering Canada's northwest.

Athabasca Landing became known as "The Gateway to the North."
