The "Blacklegs" existed in Noble and surrounding counties. They were involved with horse thievery, murders and counterfeiting. Gregory McDlougal was one of the "Blacklegs" and on January 17,1858 a posse of fifteen men arrested him and nine others, and were taken to Ligonier jail. From the time of the arrest until the 25th of the month thousands of people came to watch the procedings. Also people came who were trying to get info on their stolen property. Gergory McDougal was infamous for breaking jail twice, robbing peddlers, stealing horses and passing large amounts of counterfiet money. He was accused of murder and on January 25,1858 at 2PM witnessess convinced the Regulators of his guilt and on January 26, 1858 he was hung at Diamond Lake Hill and buried in Rome City.
